Health Interventions in Volcanic Eruptions
Yogyakarta, January 2019
Over the last couple of years, ISRP members have been helping to provide direction to the HIVE consortium as they set about to generate scientific data on effective and appropriate use of respiratory protection for use against volcanic ash. The aim of the project was to establish the effectiveness of various means of respiratory protection and generate guidance and training materials for use by NGOs and local communities.
In January, Keith Roddan, an ISRP member from the Australasia Section (3M Singapore) delivered train-the-trainer respirator fitting to 73 agency representatives in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Those attending the training will cascade further training down to community level, so that hopefully thousands of people will be trained in correct facemask use. Already we have heard that the Red Cross Bantul (a district south of Yogyakarta) have already trained around 250 participants in workshops. This is a great start!
To support the practical training initiative, an ISRP training presentation was produced which together with other HIVE materials (http://community.dur.ac.uk/hive.consortium/outputs/) forms a set of training materials.
Photo shows Keith delivering the training.
Thanks to Keith for delivering the training on behalf of the ISRP.
